Studio Second:
A piece that came out of a finished body of work but has a minor cosmetic imperfection — a glaze pinhole, a small kiln kiss, a slight warp, an uneven glaze pool. Fully functional, safe to use, just doesn't meet the standard for gallery or exhibition sale. These are pieces that an artist may keep on a studio shelf for reference information if not sold or thrown away.

The defect in this piece is some bubbling in the glaze. At the base of the form only, the white glaze did not fully flux out - even after a second firing, leaving a slightly rough surface. The glaze at the top of the cup is very runny and could potentially move further and damage the decoration. See image 5 for detail. Priced according to defect.

Materials & Making:

Translucent porcelain, high-fired to cone 9 (approximately 2,300°F)

Interior and rim finished in a food-safe clear glaze

Exterior features areas of bare porcelain, hand-sanded to a soft, stone-like surface — safe to handle and hold, though not intended for food safe contact

Fully vitrified: microwave and dishwasher safe
